Doing up a house is hard work, not to mention tiring, frustrating and expensive
Trust me, I know! We started our house makeover with the gym (which was probably a bit of a silly place to start in hindsight) and it’s only now, a full year later, that we are starting to get on to looking at other rooms in the house that are all looking quite dated.
If you’ve read any of my blog posts before you know I’m all about saving money and getting the most ‘bang for my buck’ and I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately when it comes to doing up the house, in particular the quickest and easiest way to lift the overall look of a room…and the answer might not be what you’re thinking!
Everyone always says a lick of paint can transform a room and whilst that is true it isn’t always the best option. Yes, paint can brighten a room and the right colour can hide a multitude of sins plaster and woodwork wise but if you really want to change the look of a room and make it more functional/liveable then you need to look for some cheap carpets!
Now, I know you’re probably thinking the making of a room is all in the details – a nice plant there, an Ikea print there and you are right BUT it’s flooring that changes the function of a room and by changing the function of a room you can make it feel 1000% more like home.
Our house is mainly laminate and tile and whilst that was all the rage a decade ago, now it just feels a bit dated and cold (as in not feeling very homely and actually heat wise!)
We are doing our best to go through and makeover the main areas in the house and update them as best we can without blowing the budget too much as a lot of the money will have to go towards more practical things such as re-plastering all of the hallway, its going to be a mammoth task but I’m hoping if we can get a good skim on the walls and paint it a nice neutral tone for now we can add some new carpet on the stairs, I like the look of this one in particular, and it’ll already be looking so much better.
We already gave the living room a quick coat of paint when we first moved in but I desperately want to put carpet in there too, we tried a rug at first but it really didn’t cut it, I think something like this would work in there as we’ve got a brown and gold feature wall and dark units.
Whilst I’ve been browsing the Flooring Superstore website (it’s the best place I’ve found for cheap carpets!) I’ve also found this Sisal Flatweave carpet which I LOVE and it’s fitting in perfectly with the vibe I’m thinking of for the summer house that we are adding on to the gym.
I want a kind of jungle, bronze industrial look but with teal/dark peacock blue walls…it sounds crazy but look, how well does this go together!
