Lots of us love gardening but what do you do if you move into a property with no outdoor space? This doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy plants and even an indoor greenhouse. Let’s have a look at some of the best ideas for those with no garden.
Use Your Windowsill
Your windowsills are the perfect place to grow some herbs or begin to grow your seeds. An indoor greenhouse on a budget is simply some sticks that you tie together to create a skeleton or frame to cover with a clear plastic bag. You can also use plastic containers from pound shops as easy and affordable greenhouses. How many windowsills do you have in your home? That’s a lot of potential growing space!
Recycle & Upcycle
Use those plastic containers that you get fruit and veg in like a mini indoor greenhouse! Don’t throw away your egg cartons, as these can be perfect for starting your plants off in. You just need some soil, seeds and plastic sheets to wrap it in. These are the perfect places to get your seedlings started. You can also use picture frames to piece together a mini greenhouse which could be the centrepiece of your dining table. It’s rustic but it works well! Some people have done the same with old CD cases, giving them a second life now lots of us simply use streaming services.
Technically not inside, but if you have a balcony you could pop one of those small plastic-framed greenhouses out there. Balconies are usually fairly protected from the wind but be sure to weigh the frame down with something heavy at the base or on the bottom shelf. Make sure you position it so it gets some good sunshine. You may even consider attaching it to the wall for extra security.
Hack Your Own Indoor Greenhouse
There are many ways to create your own indoor greenhouse. One of these is an Ikea hack. Get a cheap Ikea shelving unit, put it in a cupboard and attach some grow lights. You can add extra shelves should you wish and then simply place your propagator growing trays in there. You don’t have to buy new either. Maybe you have some wood laying around that you could turn into shelves, or maybe there is a house clearance store nearby. Look after them well and this will be a great way to grow!
These indoor greenhouse ideas show that you don’t need outdoor space in order to enjoy gardening. Growing seeds, tending plants and nurturing herbs which you can use in your own cooking is fantastic. It’s therapeutic and also a great activity to enjoy with your kids. Happy indoor gardening!
