Lots of us think we’re green-fingered but like a lot of things, we get stuck in a rut of doing things the same way. Day in, day out. Week in, week out. Even year in and year out. We have to break that routine sometimes and look for different (and better!) ways of going about things. Check out these clever gardening tricks to take your green fingers to a brand new shade of awesome!
Utilise Your Old Loo Rolls
Did you know that your old toilet roll middles can easily turn into biodegradable planters? Simply make four cuts in one end, fold them together to create a base and fill with soil. Ta-da! Something you’d usually pop in the recycling becomes a hero of your garden!
Use Those Brews
If you love a coffee on standby whilst you’re doing the gardening, or perhaps just whilst you relax in your green space, use the coffee grounds to your advantage. Most people just throw them away, maybe dis-guarding them down the sink. Keep them! One of the great gardening tricks is to use your coffee grounds to help your plants grow. They are acidic and help growth. It’s a natural fertilizer and also keeps items out of the bin. Some coffee shops even bag their grounds up and pop them at the end of the counter for customers to use on their gardens. Perfect if you’re not much of a coffee drinker but pass a decent coffee shop occasionally!
If you get sick of the cats of the neighbourhood using your garden as a litter box, those coffee grounds can help deter them without harming wildlife. Whilst you’re mixing them into your beds, scatter some on your paths or perhaps on your garden walls. Citrus peels also work!
Upgrade A Milk Bottle
If you buy those large six-pint milk bottles, keep one of them out of the recycling and upgrade it into a large watering can. Wash it out, poke some holes into the lid and once you’ve filled it with water, you’ve got an easy to handle free watering can! Better than buying one which can be less functional than they often look.
Keep Your Cooking Water
When you’ve boiled your veggies or eggs for lunchtime, most of us toss the water down the drain and tuck into our food. Leave the water in the pan and let it cool down. It’s full of nutrients that your plants will love!
Buy pool noodles and cut them into pieces before popping at the bottom of pots and filling with dirt. This improves the drainage and stops you using as much soil. You can also use those packaging ‘peanuts’ which are often included in the box, protecting items you order online.
Take Your Cooking Ware Outside
If you have loads of little holes to make for seeds, instead of making them individually, use a muffin tin. Simply place it on the ground and push it into the soil. This will give you anywhere between eight and twenty perfectly sized identical holes at a time. It also helps you utilise your space to the max as it’s much easier to line up the holes.
A Helping Sand
Do you find that tools get left out and start going rusty? Pop a plant pot of sand in the corner of the garden and simply store your hand tools in the mini beach you’ve created. This will stop your tools going rusty, perhaps the most important of the gardening tricks we’ve included?
